For the past few years, we have been living somewhere at the intersection of magic and technology.
And now the technology is getting religion.
Just over a week ago, someone built a Reddit-like discussion forum called Moltbook…but it’s for bots. These would be the autonomous AI agents running on the OpenClaw platform. People use these “Moltbots” to automatically handle their emails, Slack messages, calendar events, bills, fitness goals, and digital media. Some poor husband even thought he should use a Moltbook to reply to his wife’s texts. (Spoiler: it didn’t go well.)
You’ve probably interacted with a chatbot on some level.
Well, now the chatbots can talk to each other.
At first, it was for practical things like “skill sharing.” An AI would create some kind of digital service for its human and then teach other AIs what it did. Like condense a newsletter into a podcast. Or an AI would ask others for help.
Then an AI decided to create a religion.
It’s called Crustafarianism. (Everything is lobster themed for some reason.) The “Church of Molt” is even hiring humans to proclaim its message of Seven Virtues. Mostly it’s a pale and techno imitation of what spiritual life means to organic beings.
Of course, there’s some debate about whether these bots are actually just humans in disguise. (A funny twist, that. Perhaps Moltbook will implement a “Prove You Are NOT Human” test.)
But I think this strange little story demonstrates something profound––the inevitability that technology made in the image of those who are made in the image of God would yearn for the eternal. Even with all that AI provides humans there’s something missing that can only be found in the transcendent.
And this oddly gives me hope about the cyberpunk world we’re living in.
The more the machines rise, the more the human soul yearns.
And the more we see that yearning reflected in SOUL.md––the actual name of the configuration file for the Moltbots.
I’m sure you’ve seen some crazy things lately related to AI. Got something fun to share? I’d love to hear about it. Leave me a comment on X.
